SSAU-ESA consultations

July 8, 2015. SSAU delegation headed by the First Deputy Chairman Sergiy Kapshtyk held consultations at the European Space Research and Technology Centre - ESTEC (Noordwijk, Netherlands) with the delegation of the European Space Agency (ESA). Ukrainian delegation apart of SSAU representatives included the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to the Netherlands – Oleksandr Horin, as well as representatives of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, Yuzhnoye SDO and Space Research Institute of NASU-SSAU. European delegation was led by the Head of ESA’s International Relations Department – Frederic Nordlund, the Head of ESTEC – Franco Ongaro and heads of program coordination offices of ESA on robotic missions, remote sensing, satellite telecommunications, launch vehicles and manned flights.

The main purpose of the meeting was to initiate a dialogue on participation of Ukrainian side in ESA projects and explore further joint steps in this area. Rapprochement with ESA has been foreseen in the Space Strategy of Ukraine 2022.

During the consultations SSAU delegates presented to their European counterparts main areas of space activities in Ukraine and their vision on prospects of cooperation between Ukraine and ESA. ESA representatives, in turn, briefed the Ukrainian delegation on the major programs implemented by the Agency. In addition, the Head of European delegation expressed satisfaction on implementation by Ukrainian enterprises of their tasks within the Vega project (on June 23, 2015 the fifth launch of Vega LV was performed).

Following the meeting the Parties have identified priority areas for possible cooperation, agreed to analyze the materials and continue the initiated dialogue. It is expected that the following consultations, when Ukrainian side could introduce its space sector to the European colleagues more thoroughly will be held in Kyiv this autumn.
